Soberanes Fire Benefit

If you happened to be on Highway 1 in the spring of 1998 you may have seen her driving south, windows down, a bunch of Italian UCSC freshmen (she was an RA in the international dorm) squeezed into her Volkswagen Beetle. They were headed to Big Sur in what was one of many happy memories for Chef Kendra Baker in that special part of the world.

In 2015, Cara and her now fiancé CJ, left Santa Cruz to move to Big Sur. Cara was one of the original three employees of The Penny Ice Creamery, and in 2014 she and CJ helped Kendra and Zach open Assembly. From their home up the mountain from Highway 1 they have witnessed with frightening proximity the devastation of the Soberanes fire.

Monday August 29th proceeds from dinner at Assembly will go to the Soberanes Fire Fund of the Community Foundation for Monterey County. “Kendra got married in Big Sur, my wife and I have backpacked all through the mountains,” says Assembly co-owner Zachary Davis. “At the beginning of the fire we were sad, then concerned, now the scope is almost impossible to comprehend.” Several local farms, breweries and winemakers have joined the effort. Dinner will include dishes inspired by the wilds of the Big Sur mountains and coastline. Reservations/RSVPs are appreciated.
